MUSIC DEPARTMENT

ADVANCED MUSIC STUDIES
This is a survey class designed for students who are interested in expanding their musical abilities, knowledge, and appreciation. The course will contain 6 areas of study, each concluding with an exam or project. The class will be offered every 2 years and team taught by Mr. Van Ravenswaay and Mr. Vant Hul. Prerequisite: Students must posses basic music reading skills.

Overall Goals:

1. Prepare students to be better participants and leaders in school, church, and community.

2. Teach students key music elements not covered in performance ensembles.

3. Provide more in-depth background for students interested in composition.

4. Recognize and appreciate various musical styles.

5. Familiarize students with exemplary works.

FRESHMEN CHOIR
This mixed voice ensemble is open to all incoming freshmen. Auditions are required, but only for the purpose of putting students within the correct voice category. Literature studied will vary depending on the type of concert, but will basically be of Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass voicing. Attendance is mandatory at four concerts throughout the year. Students are also encouraged to audition for Opus Honor's Choir in the fall, and to participate in the State Solo and Ensemble Contest in the spring.

SOPHOMORE CHOIR
This mixed voice ensemble is an auditioned choir, open to students who meet minimum audition standards. Freshmen Choir is generally a prerequisite for Sophomore Choir. Literature studied is varied due to season and type of concert to be performed, but will be somewhat more difficult than that of Freshmen Choir. Vocal lessons are available and encouraged. Attendance is mandatory at four concerts throughout the year. Students are also encouraged to participate in the State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

SENIOR CHOIR
This mixed voice ensemble consists of students in the top two grades and is open by audition only. The Senior Choir is usually limited to 80-88 students. Literature studied includes everything from Renaissance to contemporary 20th century choral music of a medium to high degree of difficulty. Attendance is mandatory for at least four to five concerts throughout the year. Vocal lessons are available and encouraged. Students are also encouraged to participate in State Solo and Ensemble Contests as well as All-State. Freshmen and Sophomore Choirs are generally a prerequisite for this class.

FRESHMEN BAND
This band includes all the freshmen who would like to be in band. There are no auditions or chair placements. Freshmen are a part of the Pep Band. All students may try out for All-State, Honor Band, and Solo and Ensemble Contests. Attendance is mandatory at three concerts throughout the year.

SENIOR BAND
This group includes sophomores, juniors and seniors who like to play. There are no auditions or chair placements. Lessons are available to band members. These students are also members of Pep Band. All students may try out for All-State, Honor Band, and Solo and Ensemble Contests. Attendance is mandatory at three concerts throughout the year and at the Dordt Band Festival on alternating years.

STRINGS
This ensemble includes freshmen to seniors. Anyone who would like to play a string instrument is invited to join this group. All students may try out for All-State, and Solo and Ensemble Contests. Attendance is mandatory at three concerts throughout the year and at the Dordt String Festival on alternating years.
